The Steering Committee (SC) is charged with the following:
- Providing leadership for the uWeb community.
- Defining content areas for workshops and meetings.
- Communicating as the official voice of the uWeb membership.
There are five (5) positions on the uWeb Steering Committee (SC). Although membership in uWeb is open to non-UVA people, SC members must be employees of UVA. SC members are elected to a minimum term of one (1) calendar year, with at least two (2) members agreeing to serve for two (2) consecutive years (see “Elections” below).
Elections for three open (3) SC seats are held once per year during the fall semester. At that time, three (3) SC Members voluntarily agree to step down or run for re-election, and two (2) agree to stay on for another year. If the SC is not capable of coming to agreement on which members may continue for the next year, the names shall be selected by lottery. Those whose names are not selected, but who wish to stay, shall then be eligible for nomination (see “Nomination Period” below) for a followup term.
Any SC member who stays on through an election must either give up his/her seat or stand for reelection at the following annual election.
Once it is determined which SC members will remain, the upcoming election for the three (3) vacant seats shall be publicized to the uWeb membership.
There will be a two (2)-week nomination period. The SC shall solicit the membership for nominations, explaining the process and encouraging nominations. Two reminder emails will be sent to the list during this period.
There will be a five (5) working day period where nominees will be contacted to confirm if they’d like to be on the ballot. Those who are self-nominated will be added to the Election Ballot; a member who is nominated by another will first be contacted to see if she/he would like to be on the ballot. If confirmed, their name shall be added to the Election Ballot.
Election Period: The following eight (8) days shall constitute the election period. The ballot will be sent to the uWeb mailing list and reminders sent at five days and one day remaining in election period. At the conclusion of the two weeks, the votes shall be tallied and results shall be publicized to the membership.
If an SC member cannot fulfill their responsibilities, is leaving UVA, or wishes to step down prior to the end of their term, the LSP Coordinator will work with the SC to make an interim appointment from the uWeb active membership. This interim appointee will have the option to run for election during the fall semester. Any interim appointed SC member must stand for reelection at the next annual election or give up his/her seat.
The SC will make best effort to fill interim position(s) with uWeb members who have previously been nominated or have run for SC office.
